Vitamin B9, also known as folic acid, belongs to the group of B vitamins and is converted in the body into the coenzyme tetrahydrofolate (THF). THF is involved in numerous metabolic processes in the body. As a result, folic acid contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism and normal amino acid synthesis and plays a role in the process of cell division. In addition, it supports normal blood formation and normal immune system function and helps reduce tiredness and fatigue. Folic acid also promotes normal psychological function. During pregnancy in particular, adequate intake of vitamin B9 is essential. Supplementation with folic acid increases maternal folate status. A low maternal folate status is a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the growing fetus. Folic acid also plays a key role in the growth of maternal tissue during pregnancy.
