Salicylic acid is frequently used in dermatology. Salicylic acid is an organic acid and is known for its keratolytic and antiseptic properties. A major advantage over fruit acid is that salicylic acid can penetrate deeper into the skin pores. The upper layer of the skin (horny layer) is loosened and the dead skin flakes are removed. The accelerated desquamation stimulates the skin to renew itself more quickly. Salicylic acid is used for numerous skin problems (e.g. blemishes).
