The kola tree produces the popular kola seeds. More precisely, the dried seed, freed from the seed coat, is used. Kola seeds are said to be stimulating because they are rich in purine alkaloids (caffeine, theobromine) and catechin tannins (cola tannin). Kola extracts are therefore popularly used as a tonic against fatigue and drowsiness, as they are reported by some to increase the heart rate.
