Iceland moss is a plant species from the lichen family (Parmeliaceae). The mucilage is considered to be a particularly important ingredient of Iceland moss. Furthermore, bitter lichen acids, iodine and various vitamins are found in the plant. In Nordic countries, Icelandic moss was considered a household remedy for lung diseases and loss of appetite. Today it is used mainly for cough irritation, hoarseness and mucous membrane diseases.
