The red cinchona tree (Cinchona pubescens Vahl.) belongs to the Rubiaceae. Its positive properties (antipyretic, tonic and appetite stimulant) were already known to the Incas. The active ingredients are mainly bitter alkaloids (quinine, quinidine, quinchonine and quinchonidine), catechol and bitter substances. The watery/alcoholic extracts of cinchona bark are mainly used for flu-like infections, fever, as well as for digestive complaints due to the many bitter substances.
