Beta-carotene belongs to the group of carotenoids and is a naturally occurring pigment that gives many types of fruit and vegetables their characteristic orange to red colour. It is the bioactive precursor of vitamin A and is converted into vitamin A in the body as needed. This regulated conversion ensures a targeted supply of vitamin A without the risk of excessive intake. Vitamin A is involved in various physiological processes. It contributes to the maintenance of normal skin, normal mucous membranes and to the maintenance of normal vision. Additionally, it has a role in the process of cell specialization, supports a normal iron metabolism, and contributes to the normal function of the immune system. Due to its chemical structure, beta-carotene reduces oxidation processes and helps stabilise cell membranes, particularly under high radiation exposure (UVB radiation).
