The bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus L.) also known as sea oak belongs to the species of brown algae (Fucaceae). A characteristic of the bladderwrack is its distinct fishy scent. The most important ingredients of the algae are iodine, β-carotene, alginic acid, fucoidan, and laminarin. In folk medicine the bladderwrack is mostly used as a tea, nowadays it is used in slimming tea mixtures. Hildegard of Bingen also speaks of a “slimming elixir” in her scriptures.
