Birch trees (Betula) belongs to the birch family (Betulaceae). By tapping the trunk or cutting branches, the birch sap flowing for a few weeks in spring is obtained. The main components of the bark are betulin, phytosterol, tannins, bitter substances and essential oil. Birch bark has positive effects on wound healing, is said to have anti-inflammatory and cell growth inhibiting properties. It is also known to have a positive effect on neurodermatitis, psoriasis and actinic keratosis (skin damaged by sunlight).
