The bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.), also called blueberry, belongs to the heather family (Ericaceae). Blueberry leaves contain catechin tannins, flavonoids, iridoids and phenolic carboxylic acids. Hildegard von Bingen already knew about the positive effects of bilberry on the intestinal mucosa. Due to the astringent properties of the tannins contained in the leaves, they are often used to treat inflammation of the mouth and throat.
