The bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.), also called blueberry, belongs to the heather family (Ericaceae). Blueberry leaves contain catechin tannins, flavonoids, iridoids and phenolic carboxylic acids. Hildegard von Bingen already knew about the positive effects of bilberry on the intestinal mucosa.
