Andrographis herb, also called Indian gentian, belongs to the gentian family (Gentianaceae). Just like gentian, andrographis herb contains the bitter substance amarogentin. In India, andrographis herb was used to treat malaria. Even today, it is still used in traditional medicine as a fever reducer in India. In European phytotherapy, andrographis herb is used similarly to gentian for gastrointestinal complaints, loss of appetite, bloating and flatulence.
