Hoof Care for Thrush

Thrush is a commonly occurring condition affecting the soft horn structures of the hoof. It usually starts in the central sulcus of the frog and, if left untreated, can spread to the entire frog and even to the heel bulbs. To prevent complications, thrush in horses should be treated at an early stage. In cases of thrush, anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that live in oxygen-free environments) destroy the hoof horn. These bacteria are part of the normal intestinal flora and are found almost everywhere animals live. In addition to poor hygiene or neglected hoof care, improper hoof trimming and an unphysiological hoof shape are contributing factors in the development of thrush. In conformational defects such as contracted heels, the lateral grooves of the frog become severely narrowed, making it almost impossible to keep them clean and dry.

Thrush in horses presents with typical symptoms: a brownish-black, foul-smelling discharge can be found in the frog grooves. When cleaning the hooves, it becomes apparent that the grooves are deeper and the horn softer than usual. In most cases, the hind hooves are more frequently affected than the front hooves. The bacteria responsible for decay significantly soften the frog, and large portions of the horn are often loose and must be removed. In some cases, the sensitive hoof corium is already exposed. The horse will then often clearly show signs of pain, typically through pronounced lameness. Sometimes rings can be seen forming on the hoof wall – these develop as a reaction of the hoof to the inflammation caused by thrush. In such cases, it is always advisable to consult a veterinarian. Early intervention and consistent treatment significantly improve the prognosis for the horse.
