In zinc picolinate, zinc is bound to picolinic acid. In this chelated form, it shows particularly high bioavailability and therefore offers clear advantages over other zinc compounds. What matters is how much zinc actually reaches the body and is available for the numerous metabolic pathways in which it is involved. Zinc contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism. It is an essential component of certain enzymes and ensures the smooth functioning of metabolic processes. The trace element is present in all body fluids and tissues, particularly in the muscles (approx. 60%) and bones (approx. 30%). Higher concentrations are also found in hair, nails, skin, the reproductive organs, as well as the retina and the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. This contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and normal skin. Zinc contributes to normal carbohydrate metabolism, normal acid-base metabolism and normal DNA synthesis. In addition, zinc supports normal cognitive function. It plays a role in the process of cell division and therefore also supports sperm production. Furthermore, zinc contributes to maintaining normal testosterone levels in the blood. In this context, it contributes to protecting cells from oxidative stress and to normal fertility and reproduction. Ultimately, zinc also contributes to the normal function of the immune system. Since the zinc supply from foods of animal origin is usually better – as they contain higher amounts and also show increased bioavailability, whereas plant-based foods often contain phytic acid that binds zinc and reduces its absorption in the intestine – vegans and vegetarians are at particular risk of insufficient intake.
