The Canadian tormentil (Sanguinaria canadensis L.) belongs to the poppy family (Papaveraceae).It owes its name to the reddish sap found in its root. The main ingredients are benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (sanguinarine, chelerythrine, protopine and berberine). Tormentil is used for headaches, migraines, rheumatic joint pain, respiratory infections, colds, rhinitis, otitis media and menopausal symptoms.
