The nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrans), which belongs to the nutmeg family (Myristicaceae), is a bushy, evergreen tree that grows up to 12 m high, bears yellow fruits and contains one seed each, which is encased in a bright red, fleshy seed coat. This seed coat (aril) is also known as mace or nutmeg blossom. Dried or ground, the flower is used to flavor pastries, meat dishes and some types of sausage and is said to be particularly beneficial to digestion in the case of gastrointestinal problems.
