The lesser burnet (Pimpinella saxifraga) belongs to the umbelliferae (Apiaceae). The root contains essential oil and various coumarin derivatives, including mainly pimpillin. The drug smells and tastes spicy, with a sharp, acrid aftertaste. It is known that beaver root is good as a mild expectorant, for inflammation of the mouth, throat and mucous membranes. In folk medicine, the drug is described as diuretic.
